HOWARD DANIEL WEBER (published on September 11, 2007) HOWARD DANIEL WEBER (1921 - 2007) Howard Weber passed away peacefully at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba on September 9, 2007, at 5:17 p.m. He is survived by his sisters Iva Weber of Toronto and Norma (Orville) Kern of Littleton, Colorado; his daughters Janet (Sandy Hill) of Port Moody, BC and Patricia (Gary Martens) of Kleefeld, Manitoba, and his son John Weber of Fishers, Indiana, as well as his grandchildren Karen Hill, Warren Hill, John (Emilie Lemay) Martens, Becky (Robert) Guderian, Mark Weber, and Melissa Weber. He was also predeceased by his parents Collin and Frieda Weber of Kitchener, Ontario; his brothers Stanton Weber and Burton Weber, his sisters Grace Ogram and Alice Weland; and his granddaughter Laura Hill. Howard was born in Kitchener, Ontario, on January 26, 1921, and was baptized in the Regina First Baptist Church. He began working for Mutual Life of Canada at the head offices in Waterloo, Ontario in 1938. During the Second World War, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on the day Pearl Harbour was bombed (December 7, 1941). He was in the RCAF Band, traveling extensively throughout Canada during the war. While stationed in Regina in 1943, he met and married Hazel Gavel, who was a stenographer for Mutual Life of Canada. After the war, Howard's employment in various managerial positions with Mutual Life took them to various places throughout Canada, including Kitchener / Waterloo, Fort William / Port Arthur, Calgary, Lethbridge, North Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Sarnia, retiring in Calgary, High River and finally Winnipeg (at Portsmouth Retirement Residence). Howard was a person who loved his family dearly, and took a profound interest in all that they did. He took incredibly good care of Mom (Hazel) throughout the difficult eight years of her dementia. Howard paid attention to even the smallest details, making certain that everyone was treated fairly and everything was in place. Rarely did he ever forget a name of someone he met, and this reflected his superior organizational, financial and accounting skills. He always had a heart for nature, including the way in which his green touch produced immaculate and fruitful gardens, in his care for the family pets, and in his love of golf, camping and fishing in southern Alberta's foothills and mountains. Howard thoroughly enjoyed watching football, hockey and baseball. He took a lively interest in current events and politics, often having debates with the family about the news of the day, and faithfully reading newspapers and magazines from cover to cover. His love of reading extended to stories of early western Canadian history. Howard was very musical, playing both the tuba and the trumpet, and particularly appreciated the big band era songs that his RCAF Band played for dances throughout the war. Despite his battle with cancer, especially in the difficult months over this summer, Dad maintained a good sense of humour with those who took care of him. Howard and Hazel enjoyed many winters in Venture Out, Mesa, Arizona (where he enjoyed being active in the Sunday church services, and in the band) and many summers at the cottage in Manitou Beach, Saskatchewan. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service for Howard Weber will be held at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., on Wednesday, September 12, 2007, at 12:30 p.m., followed by refreshments. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grace Hospital Foundation or to CancerCare Manitoba. The family would like to extend our deep appreciation to Howard's physicians Dr. Pat Harris (whom he called his angel ) and Dr. Andy Jowett (his deeply caring family physician), the wonderful nursing staff and physicians at Grace Hospital, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority homecare program (nurse coordinator Ruth Keep and the homecare workers, especially Kelly), and his friends at Portsmouth Retirement Home who supported Dad through difficult times. Family and friends are invited to sign the Book of Condolences at www.glenlawn.ca The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Psalm 123:1-3 Arrangements entrusted to: GLEN LAWN FUNERAL HOME 455 LAGIMODIERE BLVD. 982-7550
