- A memorial service for Paula Sherwin Mercer, 58, of Hyattville was held Dec. 8 at the Hyattville School with Rev. Sara Power officiating.
Cremation has taken place. Her ashes will be scatted on 4W Ranch on the Cheyenne River north of Douglas.
Mrs. Mercer died Dec. 5 at her home in Hyattville.
She was born July 19, 1943, in Douglas to Paul Robert and Lona Marie (Fowler) Sherwin.
She was raised on the Sherwin ranch northeast of Douglas and graduated from Douglas High School in 1961. She attended Colorado State University and the University of Wyoming where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in secondary education/English.
She taught at Manderson-Hyattville High School from 1965-67 and at Manderson School from 1986-87.
On Jan. 29, 1967, she married John E. Mercer at Hyattville. After her marriage she lived on the Mercer Ranch at Hyattville where the couple raised sheep and Angus cattle.
Mrs. Mercer was a past-president of the Wyoming Angus Auxiliary. She served on the Big Horn County School District #4 board for 10 years, three of those as board president.
She was co-founder of the Paintrock Valley Art Guild and arranged art shows around Hyattville. She was a 4-H leader and directed the Hyattville Elementary School's annual Christmas play for many years.
She was an accomplished weaver and artist, but her greatest love was books. She left behind a wonderful library featuring poetry, children's literature, reference books, history works and fiction.
Mrs. Mercer is survived by her husband John of Hyattville; son Justin and wife Jenny Mercer of Hyattville; brother Len Sherwin of Hyattville; step-brother Wayne Metcalf Sherwin; sisters Mary Ellen Sherwin of Douglas and Peggy and husband Jim Knoles of Minitare, Neb; best friends Judy Russell Manning of Douglas and Denise Gifford of Basin; and numerous nieces and nephews and their children.
Memorials in her name in care of Stockgrower's State Bank, P.O. Box 790, Worland, 82401, would be appreciated by the family.
