Text | "Hagey, McKane, and Hammond all show Abraham with two marriages: one to Rebecca Miller and one to Mary Custer. But they assign the children in different ways: Hagey and McKane give exactly the same birth and death dates (1763-1819) to both wives - which suggests that one copied a typo in the other. Hagey shows only one child (Jesse M.) and attributes him to Rebecca Miller. McKane, on the other hand, attributes all 8 children (including Jesse M. and Abram C. -- all born in PA) to Mary Custer. Hammond - has only the first marriage to Rebecca Miller and attributes the only 5 children she lists to her -- including Jessie M. and Abraham C.. Darrell Sego has only the second marriage to Mary Custer and attributes all 8 of Jacob's children to her. The 'M.' in Jesse's name suggests that his mother was Rebecca Miller. (Jesse also married a Miller). Similarly, the 'C' in Abram's name suggests that his mother was Mary Custer. Since Jesse was the second born, and Abram was born 12 years later, it would appear that Rebecca was the first wife who may have died shortly before 1803, and that Mary was the second wife who married Abraham in PA and accompanied him to Canada in 1809. (Hagey's note indicates that Abraham and his wife 'Mary' both died there in 1819.) WARNING: In my view, the preponderance of the evidence suggests that at least the first 5 of Abraham's children were born to Rebecca Miller and the last one, two, or three of his children to Mary Custer. Hannah and Elizabeth could have been the last children of Rebecca (and I have listed them this way) or the first two children of Mary. Apparently all the children were born in Chester Co., PA before Abraham and his second wife moved to Canada. But I have no primary sources to confirm the dates of the two marriages or which wife was the mother of each child." | |
