CARLISLE UNITED CHURCH CEMETERY
History of Carlisle United Church Cemetery
This cemetery and its church are located in the village of Carlisle on the East side of Centre Road at No. 1432. It is South of the Twelve Mile Creek. The south side of the cemetery is bordered by Blue Heron Lane. It is part of Lot 7 Concession 8 in the former Township of East Flamborough, now in the Town of Flamborough.
Worship services date from 1830 when four families gathered for Sunday prayers in the home of John and Catharine Eaten, Wesleyan Methodists, on the West side of Centre Road. Their home became a preaching point on the Dundas Methodist Circuit known as "Eatens', and the settlement had the name Eatonville,
Across the road on the East side of Centrl: Road on land purchased from John Sherman, a school house was erected in 1839. It. also served the Methodists as "the Chapel at the Twelve". The deed from John Sherman to the Wesleyan Methodist Church, of 100 acres, was dated Oct. 4, 1839. Adjoining that chapel was a small burial ground in which several burials had already taken place.
Probably the first burial in this cemetery is indicated by our recording #149. The inscription is: IN MEMORY OF / ALEXANDER KERR / DIED IOTH JULY 1836 / AGED 58 YEARS / A NATIVE OF CO. FERMANAGH / IRELAND.
The next burial may have been that of John Eaten, a founder of the church, who died 18 June 1837, aged 64 years and 3 months. The large monument, which bears his name and that of many of his descendants states, "JOHN EATON / BORN 1773 -- DIED 1837" (our recording #25). Also in 1837 there was the burial of"LEWIS / SON OF / ROB'T & ELIZA JANE / HAMILTON / DIED 16 JULY 1837 / AE 2 YRS. 10 MOS" (our recording #154).
In 1852, the chapel was replaced by a frame church, Its location was just South of the location of the present church. The cemetery was on its North side.
By 1853, the settlement had been named Carlisle.
In 1874 there was a union of Wesleyan Methodist and Canadian New Connexion Wesleyan Methodist churches. Resulting from this a new circuit was formed in 1875, with Carlisle as the head. A parsonage was built and completed the following year.
In 1891 the present large brick church was built .
In 1925, by a further union, Carlisle Methodist Church became Carlisle United Church.
