Memorial Tablet Unveiled
There had been brief showers during the earlier part of the afternoon
but the sky cleared. Into brilliant sunshine as Albert Gingrich, great-great-grandson
of John and Catharine Eaton unveiled the beautiful bronze tablet that
had been affixed to the red granite monument that. marks their resting
place in the Carlisle cemetery. Mr. Gingrich, who is in training at Western
University for the work of a medical missionary, recalled the changes
that have taken place in the 100 years since the event they were commemorating,
and paid tribute to the qualities that had marked the earlier members
of the family. He expressed the hope that the same ability to meet new
difficulties and to conquer them might be found in their descendants.
Lines of purple ribbon led from the monument of the founders of the
family to the graves of all their direct descendants who lie interred
in that cemetery, and each grave had been marked with flowers. At the
conclusion of the unveiling the entire gathering joined in the singing
of the hymn, "Faith of Our Fathers," led by Mrs. Dewitt Galloway and Mrs.
H. E. Walker.
Immediately around the monument as the flag dropped from the tablet
stood Ambrose Eaton, Fawcett Eaton, John G. Eaton, Tudor Eaton, Thomas
Eaton, Elam Eaton, I. W. Eaton, W. O. Sealey, Enoch Eaton, Mr. and Mrs.
H. P. Ostrosaer, Mrs. Alfred, Hess, Dr. Murray Eaton, Mrs. Louisa Washburn,
Miss Grave Eaton, Miss Margaret Eaton, Mrs. Charles Eaton-Galloway and
Thomas H. Eaton.
Mr. Sealey presented to the gathering the regrets of a great many who
had written or telegraphed their sentiments on their inability to attend.
Among these were A. P. Ross, of Toronto; G. M. Eaton, of Oakville; R.
W. Eaton, of the T. Eaton Company; C. E. Galloway, now in California,
and F. W. Eaton, of Philadelphia, whose connection with the family was.
discovered through the broadcasting of a preliminary announcement of the
reunion.
