A shout for "Mr. Eaton" raised on Tudor Eaton's farm at Carlisle, on
Saturday, would have been answered by a full battalion strength of Mr.
Eaton's.
The Eaton and Vanduzen family gathered there for a great family reunion
on the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of the settlement on
that ground of John Eaton and his wife Catharine Vanduzen Eaton. By noon
a thousand people were present for the picnic lunch.
By' the time the chief event of the day, the unveiling of a tablet
to the memory of the pioneers of the family took place, there were fully
two thousand people in the great throng; and for the evening part of the
program between 500 and 600 more arrived.
Cars were parked for fully a mile along the road opposite the Tudor
Eaton farm
The entire program had been excellently planned and the organization
was complete for the handling of the large crowd. W. O. Sealey of Hamilton
acted as chairman and general master of ceremonies and kept things moving
so that there was not an unoccupied minute from the time luncheon was
over until the last candle had burned itself out in the Chinese lanterns
at night As first assistants he had Allan Eaton as director of grounds;
Charles Eaton, games; Clark Eaton, illuminations; Miss Alice Eaton, lunches,
and Miss Florence M Eaton, secretary.
The farm, which is a part of the great acreage that John Eaton, the
common ancestor of the greater part of the crowd, had hewn from the forest,
was trimmed and clipped and pruned to perfection. A big stage provided
a setting for many events of the program, and everywhere gay bunting and
bright Chinese lanterns lent color to the scene.
As the crowds were arriving registration was the order of the day.
Miss Gladys Eaton, so well known to many Toronto house wives, took charge'
of this and had a happy word of welcome for all. There were special books
for the registration of the descendants of all the sons and daughters
of the original pioneer couple These were: Seymour Eaton, Eliza-Jane Eaton
Griffin-Raspberry, Enoch Eaton, Wesley Eaton, John Eaton, Anson Eaton,
Sally Eaton Tansley and Daniel Eaton .
