Craigvale
History of Craigvale and Stroud
The 1860's
The Craigvale Post Office was in operation from 1863-1947,
then was closed after eighty years of service.
David Hunter married Eliz Maneer (d/o Sam) on 11 Dec 1863, at St Paul's
Methodist Church, Painswick, Ontario. The marriage was pereformed by Rev
J. S. Clark. They took up residence in Craigvale, and homesteaded the
northern half of the farm. For two years David rented the south 1/2 from
his brother William who suffered from rheumatism and was unable to do
heavy work. David and Elizabeth eventually went to Manitoba (about 1892).
Their son James, 1868-1889, who died at age 21 years, is buried in his
grandfather, Samuel Maneer's grave, in Stroud, Ont. David Hunter, 1837-1911
(s/o Andrew and Isabella), and Elizabeth Maneer (1843-1936), are both
buried in Zion Cemetery in Fox Warren, Manitoba. In July 1923, Eliz was
living with her daughter in Winnipeg.
Stephen Maneer had a lumber and shingle-mill on the south side of the
road through the village, also a cooper shop in which barrels for the
flour-mill were made.
