Little Tiny Tim the Littlest Hammer

Our story is about the Hammer family and mainly about Little Tiny Tim the smallest of the Hammer family.

There was Mr. Sledge Hammer who was good for heavy pounding. There was Mrs. Ball & Pean Hammer. She was used by machinists for heavy machine work. There was Domie Claw Hammer. He was used by carpenters for driving nails into wood. Then there was Sarah Tack Hammer. She was used for light hammering and driving tacks when fastening upholstery on chairs. Then there was Little Tiny Tim Hammer who was so small no one knew what to use him for.

The Hammer family lived in the land of Happiness which was ruled by a very good and wise king. Although he was good and wise, he was very strict for he knew that the happiest people were those who knew how to obey rules and laws and so when he said something he expected it to be done.

People from all over the world came to live in the land of Happiness because they had heard how nice it was there and so the country grew until the king could not look after it by himself so he divided it into a number or provinces.

Over the providence of Melody he appointed a fine young man to rule there. This young prince grew to love his people very much. So much that he did his best to help people whenever he could. If while he was travelling on a muddy road in his carriage he came upon a place where a cart was stuck in the mud, he would get out and help till the cart [was] freed and ready to go again. Or if he heard of anyone being sick or in need of help he would go to see what he could do for them. Gradually the people grew to love him so much that they tried to be like him and help each other whenever they could.

One day the prince needed a sledge hammer to do some heavy pounding and to drive some long stakes into the ground so he went to the hardware store to get Mr. Sledge Hammer. When the Prince came to where the Hammer family were kept Little Tiny Tim stood out on the front of the shelf and stood as big and straight as he could and flexed his muscles and when the prince saw him he picked him up and said, "My, what a tiny little hammer. I wonder what he is used for." Then the prince put him down and walked away.

After that when Tiny Tim went out to play with the other children, sometimes they would dance around him in a circle and sing "Little Tiny Tim. What's the use for him." When Tiny Tim could he would break away from their circle to run away and hide.

One day the king came to see the prince because he had heard how nice things were in the province of Melody because the prince was so nice and when he the king saw that everything that he had heard was true he presented the prince with a beautiful medallion for looking after his province so well.

When he gave the prince the medallion he told him that he must wear it every time the king came to visit him.

A few months later the king sent word that he was coming to have his annual inspection of the province of Melody. So the prince made ready for the king's visit and he waited till the last minute to put on his medallion and when he went to put it on it caught on the corner of a table and broke the chain.

Now the prince didn't know what to do because he remembered the king had said he must wear it when he came. The prince decided to do what we all should do that is to tell the truth.

When the king realized it was an accident and the prince was telling the truth he said, "I will go and inspect the next province and I'll be back at noon tomorrow and I expect you will have it repaired by then. If it is not I will have to banish you from the kingdom for ever" and he left.

Now the prince began to wonder how he could fix the chain. All he needed was a small tool to tap the chain link together again.

While the prince was wondering where he could get a small enough tool to repair the link he remembered the little tiny hammer at the hardware store so he went to the store to get it.

Now Tiny Tim had had an awful day that day. First of all some relatives came to visit his family and they started to tease him about his size, and telling him if he didn't hurry up and grow he wouldn't be good for anything. Then he went outside and the children caught him in their circle and sang their little song, "Little Tiny Tim What's the use for him." They kept it up until finally he was able to break from the circle and went out and found the darkest corner on [the] darkest shelf and sat down and felt sorry for himself.

When the prince came to the hardware store they went to find Tiny Tim and couldn't find him. They looked and looked all over but they couldn't find him.

Mr. Sledge Hammer offered his help but he would only smash the chain even more and all the other Hammer family offered their help but none of them were of any use.

The prince went home with the promise of the man in the store that he would keep looking and when he found him he would bring him right over.

The man looked all the rest of the day and the next morning. In the meantime the prince began to get worried and when morning came he started to pace up and down the room wondering where Little Tiny Tim had gone.

It got to be eleven o'clock then eleven thirty and as the prince paced up and down the room he looked out of the window and saw the king's carriage turn into his driveway. But just then the prince's door burst open and the hardware man had Little Tiny Tim in his hand.

They quickly put the links of the chain together and gave the open link a little tap that only Little Tiny Tim could give and the chain was fixed.

So when the king came in the prince was wearing the beautiful medallion.

The prince was so happy that from that time on every year they celebrated a holiday in the province of Melody in honour of Little Tiny Tim. And the children would catch Little Tiny Tim in their circle and dance around him and sing, "Little Tiny Tim. We know the use for him."

First Ending

A wise man once said, "Each of us has a talent or a group of talents that no one else in the world has" so it is up to each of us to find out what talents we have and then use them to help our fellow men and women to live better lives.

Second Ending

When we started I said this story is a fairy tale. By now you all know it is. But there are some lessons to learn from it. Can you tell me anything you think might be a lesson to us from this story.

1) No matter how small we are or how much we feel we aren't capable of doing things we should try to do different things to find out what we can do best.

2) We shouldn't criticize others because we think they can't do things. We could get a great big surprise sometimes.

3) We shouldn't hesitate or refuse to do things because they are only little things. Sometimes the big things can't get done until the little ones are done first.

4) Sometimes we think because we are not big enough or we haven't got enough education or the right education we can't do things. The main thing is to try to find something we like doing and work from there. Someone has said that each os us has a talent or a combination of talents that no one else in this world has. Our job is to find out what ours is. I read about a man the other day who only had a grade 8 education but he has become a multimillionaire from inventing electronics things.

Our Father in Heaven, help us to find the things that you have put us here to do. Help us to be not too proud to do the humblest of things. Help us to prepare ourselves to do the great big jobs if You want us to. Give us the joy and happiness that comes from doing a good job whether it be big or little. Go with us now and help us to do Your will always. Amen.
